How are the mental states and brainwaves related?

Brainwaves are produced by synchronized electrical pulses from masses of neurons communicating with each other within our brains. Brainwaves are detected using sensors placed on the scalp. Scientists discovered that different frequencies of brainwaves correspond to different states of consciousness and mental behaviors such as thoughts, emotions, etc.

How does meditation affect the brain?

Modern neuroscientists have discovered that the structure of the brain is constantly changing throughout one’s lifetime, this is called neuroplasticity. 

Like the muscles on our body that can be enhanced through physical training, the structure of our brain can also be changed through mental efforts. However, there are two sides of the same coin. If we keep feeding our brain with negative thoughts and emotions, the corresponding part of the brain will form more neural circuits which result in more negative thoughts and emotions. On the other hand, if we direct your mind toward love, compassion, gratitude and happiness, the corresponding part of the brain will form more neural circuits which enable us to become more proactive and positive.
